Talking about Rights

The SL&RR program advocates for the rights of people with intellectual disability – in this case focusing particularly on their right to relationships that are respectful. Rights provide freedom, choice and opportunities. It is common for people with disabilities to experience absence of freedom or lack of opportunities as a result of someone else’s choices.

Women with disabilities are often denied the ability to make choices about basic things like food, where and who to live with, and going out. Australia is a signatory of the UNCRPD which aims to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disability.
